Varanasi Tourism Information

A city, which is beyond the dates and from the eras, is Varanasi. Varanasi is one of the oldest civilized cities of the India in the world. The old city is one of the major religious pilgrims of Hindu religion and also known as Kashi or Banaras.

The City is located at Uttar Pradesh state in India. The name Varanasi probably derived from two rivers Varana and Asi that flank the city.

History:

who established this holy city? Only God knows. The name of this holy city is mentioned in Vaids and Purans.

According to Vamana Purana that two holy rivers Varuna and Asi originated from a holy body at the beginning of time itself. So the land lying between these two rivers called as a ‘Varanasi’.

River Front (Ghats):

Temples, pavilions, terraces, palaces and row of countless stone made foot steps (Ghats) are the main heart touching beauty of the river front. Most of these building were constructed during 18th and 19th centuries. For centuries, devotees are performing ritual walk along with Asi river especially follow the routes of Panchatirthi yatra. Varanasi has a more than 1000 ghats like Asi ghat, Kedara ghat, chauki ghat, chaumsathi ghat Man Mandir ghat, lalita ghat are some important ghats of Varanasi.

Durga Temple:

this holy temple also called Monkey Temple, got its name because the presence of large number of monkeys in the temple.

The temple was built during a 18th century by a Bengali Maharani. According to legends, the present idol of goddess Durga was not made by man but appeared naturally in the temple. Non-Hindus can enter the courtyard but not the inner sanctum of the Durga temple.


Chunar:

Chunar fort is situated 40 km away from the Varanasi. The fort was built by Maharaja Vikramaditya. The fort has a history that in 1540 Sher Shah Suri won this fort from Humayun and in 1575 fort recaptured by Humayun’s son Akbar and finally captured by British. Sun-dial and huge walls is the perfect model of architecture, but the best credit is a superb view of Holy Ganga from the fort.

Chandraprabha wildlife sanctuary:

This century is situated at Chandraprabha forest about 70 km from Varanasi. Rajdari and Devdari are two waterfalls within a forest. So it could be a good chance to meeting wild natural beauty.

Vindhyanchal:

A holy temple of Vindhyavasini Devi, Astabhuja and Kalikhoh is 75 km away from the city.
Durga temple, Tulsi Manas temple, Sankat mochan Mandir, Bharat Mata Mandir, Alamgir Mosque and Jain temple are other tourist sights in Varanasi.
