Ujjain Tourism Information

Ujjain one of the oldest cities of India is situated at the bank of Kshipra River. The Ujjain city is located in the Malwa region of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Ujjain is an abode of one of the twelve shrines of Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva. Once in twelve year Kumbh Mela held in this sacred city of the Hindus.

History of ujjain:

At the earliest time the city was known as Ujjain and ruled by Avanti Kingdom (4th century). Before Mauryan Empire, the Sungas dynasty and Satavahanas dynasty ruled the area. Ujjain is considered to be the capital of King Vikramaditya, who was famous for his justice.

During 6th and 7th centuries was the major center of Mathematics and astronomical research and give legend like Brahmagupta (Great mathematician who discovered Zero), Varahamihir, and Bhaskaracharya.

In 1235 Ujjain was invaded by the force of Delhi Sultan and destroyed many important temples. During the reign of Akbar, Ujjain became the capital of Malwa region.

After the last of 18th century the Ujjain ruled by the Maratha leader Sindhia, who later established his headquarter at Gwalior and until the Indian independence, Ujjain remained part of Gwalior state.

Ujjain Tourist Attractions

Ujjain formally called as Ullaini has lot of tourist attractions.

Being a religious city Ujjain is one of the most visited tourist places in India. Some important tourist sites of Ujjain are:

Mahakaleshwara Temple:

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas in India, Mahakaleshwara is a Shiva Temple and it is also very famous tourist temple like other 12 Jyotirlingas. The temple has an idol of Omkareshwara Shiva consecrated in the sanctum above the Mahakal Shrine. The temple also has some exquisitely carved images of Ganesh, Parvati, Kartikeya and Shiva’s Bull, Nandi.

Harsiddhi Temple:

This temple is devoted to Goddess Annapurna, who is supposed to be the fulfiller of all human wishes. The temple also known as the Harisiddhi, where Hari in Hindi means Lord Vishnu and Siddhi in Hindi means Success.

Vikram Kirti Mandir:

This is an archeological Museum and an Art Gallery. It is actually a Cultural Centre. It is reminiscent of Vikramaditya who is supposed to be the finest judge in the world.

Chintaman Ganesh:

This ancient temple has an unbelievable history. It is told that the image of Lord Ganesh in the antique temple Chintaman Ganesh is not man made, while it has been created by the Lord Himself.

Bhartrihari Caves:

These caves belong to the renowned scholar poet Bhartrihari, who used these caves to meditate and live in. It is near the river Kshipra.
