Rameswaram Tourism Information



Rameswaram is one of the holiest shrines in India to Hindu. Rameswaram town is located on an Island in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu state, India. Rameswaram town is separated from its country (India) land by the Pamban channel. Every year thousand of tourists reached here and make it a busting pilgrim center.

History of Rameswaram:

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ram built a bridge (Ram Setu) across the sea from Rameswaram to Lanka to rescue his wife Sita, from Ravana (A king of Lanka, who abducted Sita).

This is also believed that Rameswaram a place where Lord Ram worshipped Lord Shiva. Rameswaram is also known as Varanasi of the south.

Later different Dynasties ruled the Rameswaram town in different periods. In 15th century Pandya ruled the town. Later during 17th century this region ruled by the reign of Nayaks of the Vijayanagar Empire. After period of Nayaks of the Vijayanagar Empire, Sethupathis became the ruler of the region and during their reign Rameswaram become a center of art and architecture.

Sri Ramanatha Temple:

Rameswaram is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India. It is believed that this holy shrine is a place where Lord Ram worshipped Lord Shiva on his way back from Lanka.

It is considered that without completed pilgrimage of Rameswaram pilgrimage of Kashi (Varanasi) is incomplete.

Gandamadhana Parvata:

The Gandamadhana Parvata has a Mandapam that enshrines footprint of Lord Ram. Gandamadhana Parvata is situated just outside of Ramanatha temple and offers a pictures view of the island.

Sri Kondandarama Temple:

Sri Kondandarama Temple is situated about 8 km from the Ramanatha temple.

Sethu:

Sethu is situated about 5 km south of the Ramanatha temple, said to believe that this a part of Ram Setu (bridge), which was built by Sri Ram and his army to cross over to Lanka. There is a temple of Sri Anjaneya and there are nine stones visible in the sea, at low tide. According to believe these stone were set up by Sri Ram and represent Navgrahas (Nine Planets).
