Puri Tourism Information


One of the famous shrines in India, Puri, is situated on the cost of Bay of Bengal in an Indian state of Orissa.

Puri is a popular tourist destination of Orissa because of famous Jagannath temple. Puri is well connected with other parts of country by air, trains, and roads.

History of Puri:

According to historical evidences in 9th century Adi Shankaracharya visit the city and established one of his four Pithas.

In 10th century Somavamsha King Yayati started the construction of Jagannath Temple and after that the place became a place of worship and till today it’s a holy pilgrim of Hindus. Every year Jagannath Yatra organized in the Puri and thousand of devotees come from around the world and take part in this holy festival.

Puri is situated at the cost of Bay of Bengal and has tremendous beautiful beaches, resorts, and most importantly the numerous holy temples and these wonders make Puri a perfect tourist destination. But fact is that Puri is mainly visited by the tourists due to the temple of Lord Jagannath.

Jagannath Temple:

The temple of Lord Jagannath is a biggest tourist attraction of the Puri. This huge and ancient temple was built by the King Indradyumna after seeming the deity Lord Jagannath in dream. The temple is a superb example of architecture of that period. The holy temple has tall Shikharas (Spires) and huge pillars support the building. The pillars has embellished with scenes from the life of Lord Krishna.

Gundicha Temple:

Gundicha Temple lies toward the northeast direction of the Jagannath Temple. The Gundicha Temple built during the 16th and 17th century. During the Rath Yatra festival, Lord Jagannath stay for seven days in Gundicha Temple, popularly known as HIS aunt’s house.

Swargadwar:

One of the tourist attractions of Puri, Swargadwar is situated on the seashore and is a sacred place. It is believed that a dip here in the sea is open the door of Swarga (Heaven).

Jagannath Ballav Math, Chaturdham Veda Bhawan, Bedi Mahavir, Ardhasani, Chakra Tirtha, and Dasavatara Math are other tourist attractions of Puri.
