Udhagamandalam is a famous hill station of south India and one of the most visited tourist destinations of India, located at the Nilgiri Hills.

Popularly called Ooty (Ootacamund), the town situated at the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Ooty stands at an approximate height of 7,440 feet above the sea level.

History of Udhagamandalam (Ooty):

In an ancient time Nilgiri Hills (Udhagamandalam or Ooty) were the part of Chera Empire. Later the region was ruled by Ganga dynasty, Hoysala dynasty, and Tipu Sultan and came under the hand of British in the 18th century.

John Sullivan first established the town (British governor of Coimbatore province). He occupied the land in this beautiful hill town. Later many British citizens bought many square kilometers in a day for the price of few meals to the local tribes. During British Raj the town developed rapidly. Udhagamandalam (Ooty) was served as a summer capital of Madras presidency.

This beautiful hill station of south India is a famous tourist destination, with a scenic splendor of greenery and climate. There are so many places to visit, which can make your Ooty tour memorable.

Stone House:

this building is the first ‘Pukka’ house in Ooty, built by John Sullivan. It is situated inside the premises of the Government Arts College.

The Railway Station:

This railway station is a unique piece of British architecture.

The station provides a glimpse of British Raj. This Railway is included in a list of World Heritage site.

Ooty Botanical Garden:

the 22 acre garden was established in 1847 for the research work in flora of the area. It is a very beautiful tourist site in Ooty.

Ooty Lake:

Ooty Lake is an artificial lake, was built by Johan Sullivan in 1825. Ooty Lake is around 2.5 km in length and 40 feet deep. In this Lake tourist can enjoy the boating as well as fishing, but before go for fishing you need to prior permission from the officials.

Except these wonderful places there are so many other interesting tourist sites to see like Doddabetta (The highest peak of the city), Kotagiri, Rose Garden, Mini Garden, and Art Gallery - Lalith kala Academy.
