Mathura Tourism Information



Mathura is one of the oldest religious cities of India, situated at the river bank of Yamuna at Uttar Pradesh, India.

It is to believe that Lord Krishna was born in this holy place, Mathura. This pilgrimage is received a large number of devotees of lord Krishna every day.

History of Mathura:

According to Hindu mythology Mathura is a birth place of Lord Krishna, but the first written references about Mathura is 2500 BC year old. In 6th century it was the capital of Shursen Republic.

Late the city was also ruled by Mayur and Sunha dynasties. The city sacked and destroyed so many times by many brutal attackers like Mahmud of Ghazni, Lodi and Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Later it was controlled by the British and used as army cantonment base.

River belt:

If one would like to get a most spiritual experience in Mathura, Just take a walk in a river belt of Mathura and feel the divine wideness of Yamuna.

The enter river front has a number of temples and ghats with facing holy river Yamuna.

Kansa Qila:

This Qila (fort) was built by Raja Man Singh of Amber. Later Sawai Jai Singh added the observatory on it. This ruin Qila is not in good condition and needs a renovation.

Archaeological Museum:

This museum is located at Dampiar Park, was built by British in year 1874. There is a rare collection of sculptures, pottery, terracotta and bronze coins from the Gupta and Kushan period.

Holy Trithas (Ghat):

Being a Hindu religious city, Mathura has a 25 trithas (Ghats- A holy place for bath). Every day devotees take bath in these ghats for the Moksa. Asi ghat, prayaga ghat, Chakra ghat and Visrama ghat are some famous ghats of Mathura.

Dwarkadheesh Temple:

This temple was built in 1814. This main temple is decorated lavishly during the Janmashtami, Diwali and Holy festivals.

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi:

his complex is to believe that it’s a Lord Krishna’s birth place.

Jama Masjid:

This mosque was built by Nabir khan in 1661 AD.
