Lucknow consider as a one of the most sophisticated and cultured city of India. In past it was the city of Nawab’s and now it’s a capital of one of the biggest (In terms of population) state of India, Utter Pradesh.

Today Lucknow is politically active city which is moving toward modernization with a glory of past. Lucknow is not a tourist destination but there is still a Nawabi touch in Lucknow, which is enough to visit a city.

History of Lucknow:

The Modern Lucknow was established by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1775, he belonged to Awadh dynasty.

He brought many artists and thinkers from different parts of the country and Persia, who bringing Shi’s tradition with them. During Awadh’s reign Lucknow developed as a hub of cultural and artistic activity. But in mid eighties, Awadh lost his glory, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last ruler of Lucknow was so incompetent and negligible ruler.

This attitude of a ruler gave chance to British Empire to capture the Lucknow and finally Awadh dynasty siege by the British. During the 1857’s revolution more than 3000 people took shelter in the Residency under the command of Sir Colin Campbell, after siege of 87 days it ended on 17 November 1857. After that incident British re-captured the Lucknow in start of 20th century.

Residence:

Residence was the residential area for the British residents. It was built during 1780 and 1800, as garrison. This colony is a perfect example of British architecture with big lawns, kothis, quarters and overlooks of Gomti River. If one wants to turn pages of history, he can find the mark of 1857’s in the walls of ruined residence.

Rumi Darwaza:

Rumi Darwaza is a huge ornamental gateway, which was built by Nawab Asaf-uf-daula as a replica of a gate in Istanbul in year 1784.


Sikandrabad garden:

This garden was used by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. Now it has converted as National Botanical Research Institute, the garden open to the public (6 am to 5 pm).

Kaiserbagh area:

This area is situated at the south of the Residence. Kaiserbagh area was built by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in 1850. He wanted develop this area as a eighth wonder of world.

The old market area:

If one wants to feel the charm of old Lucknow, he should visit the old market area indeed. Small and narrow Gullies (Lanes) and shops (from where you can sell Chikankari garments and attar) provide an ultimate feel of old days charm.

Chhota Imambara or Hussainabad and Bara Imambara are two major architectural wonder of Lucknow, without visit these tourist places Lucknow tour will be incomplete.
