In actual Konark is a site of the 13th century Sun Temple, built in black granite by king Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga dynasty. The temple is a one of the most important Brahman sanctuaries and is a World Heritage Site.

History of Konark:

Konark derived its name from Konark (‘Kona’ mean corner and ‘Arka’ mean Sun), presiding diety of the Sun temple. The konark temple was built by Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga dynasty, in 13th century.

During the kingdom of Kalinga, Konark was the bustling port. The history of Konark shows that during Kalinga kingdom, Konark had a good maritime trade relation with Southeast Asian countries.

Konark Tourist Attractions

Sun temple is one and only tourist attraction of this small village. The Sun temple of Konark has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO.

The Sun temple was built in 13th century, by the king Narasimhadeva I of the Ganga dynasty.

The temple conceived as a gigantic chariot of Sun God, with twelve pair of exquisitely ornamented wheels pulled by seven pair of horses.

The temple is a perfect example of ancient architectural grandeur and no doubt one of the marvelous monuments of India.

Its fine traceries and scrollwork, as well as the beautiful and natural cut of human and animal figures, give superiority over other temples in India. A beach of Konark is popular tourist spot, though the water is deceptively calm. Its main attraction lies in its view of the Sun temple. Konark Sun temple is one of the most popular tourist monument of Orissa.
