Jorhat Tourism Information
Jorhat is a small town at Jorhat district in Assam, India. This small district is famous for its sprawling tea gardens. The world renowned Teklai Experimental Center is situated in the Jorhat town.
History of Jorhat:
Jorhat was the last capital of Ahom Kingdom. In year 1794 Gaurinath Singha, the Ahom King, shifted his capital from Sibsagar to Jorhat. During Ahom Reign, Jorhat town was a flourishing commercial metropolis, until the series of invasions by the Burmese in 1817, they destroyed the city completely. |

Majuli Island:
Majuli Island is the world’s largest river island in the River Brahmaputra. Majuli is famous for satras, there are over 665 Satra in Assam, out of which 65 are situated in Majuli. The important Satras in this island are the Auniti Satra, Garamur Satra, Kamalabari Satra, and Dakhinpat Satra. The handloom and pottery work of tribes of Majuli is famous all over the world. |

Dhekiakhowa Bar Namghar:
Dhekiakhowa Bar Namghar is a prayer hall used by Hindu, is situated near Majuli in Jorhat. The room enshrines the idols of Lord Hanuman and Ananta. It was built by saint-reformer Madhavdeb during 1497-1539.
Jorhat Gymkhana:
Jorhat Gymkhana was established by D. Slimmon in year 1876. It is a social club for sport, recreation and social-cultural activities in Jorhat. Jorhat Gymkhana Club, with its tennis, billiards, bridge, race week, flower balls, seasonal balls, and ubiquitous bar gossip, is a must see place in Jorhat, Assam. The Gymkhana has one of the area’s most exciting 9-hole golf courses.
Lachit Borphukan’s Maiden:
Lachit Borphukan’s Maiden is the vault of the greatest ever Ahom General, who defeated the might Mughals at Saraighat in 1672.
