Gwalior Tourism Information



Gwalior is one of the historical cities of India with a glory of past. Gwalior is situated at Madhya Pradesh, nearly 120 km from Agra.

City has a lot of tourist places for visit, because you can feel the aroma of royalty in these places. Gwalior was ruled by the great kings of different powerful dynasties and was the trade route between the north and south in the past.

History of Gwalior:

2000 year ago, a Rajput chieftain Suraj Sen Built a fort in the honor of hermit saint Gwapila and named the place Gwalior.

After that many clans like Kachawahas, Pariharas, Tomers, Lodi’s, Mughal and Scindias ruled the area. Scindias dynasty was the last ruler of Gwalior. They ruled till India’s independence and during their rule, Gwalior was the growing industrial and economical state.

Gwalior has a glorifying past of different dynasties and was the center of many activities.

It has a lot of tourist places to visit and tells the glorious story of the Gwalior city. Some important places to visit are:

Gujri Mahal:

This palace was constructed by Raja man Singh for his wife Gujer Princess ‘Mrignayani’ during 1515-1517.

The room made in this palace is a perfect example of marvelous architecture.

Jai Vilas Palace:

This luxurious palace was built by Maharaja Madhav Rao-I in 1875. This palace is a current residence of Scindhia Royal family, which still shows of legacy of a royal family. The 35 rooms of the palace have been converted into a museum, where royal robes, thrones, swords, crystal train and other royal ornaments are display. This palace was designed by Michael Filoz.

Jain Idols:

These Idols are situated at the premises of Gujari Mahal. There statuses are great example of architecture.

Tomb of Tansen:

Tansen was the very famous singer of Akbar’s reign. He was the one of Akbar’s nine gold. Every year a grand music festival (Tansen Samaroh) organized here. In this festival musician come from across the country and perform.

Samadhi of Rani Laxmi Bai:

The first lady worrier, who shake the British Empire were martyr in this city. Her Samadhi is situated at the campus of phool bagh. In the memory of her martyrs a fair organized every year on 18th of June.

Saas Bahu Ka Mandir:

This 32 meter long temple dedicated to thousand-armed Lord Vishnu. It is a perfect example of 11th century’s artistic architecture.
