History of Gangtok:
The earliest historical record of Gangtok date back from the construction of the Hermitic Gangtok Monastery in 1716. Until the construction of the Enchey Monastery (An important Tibetan pilgrimage center) in 1840, Gangtok was the small hamlet. In 1894, Thutob Namgyal, the Sikkimese monarch under the British rule, shifted the capital from Tomlong to Gangtok, Increased its importance.
After independence of India, in 1947, Sikkim became a nation-state of India, with a condition that it would retain its independence. In 1975, the monarchy was abrogated and Sikkim became India’s 22nd state, with Gangtok as a Capital. |
White House:
The White Hall has historical value and is situated on the Ridge of the hill. This two storied structure has typical British architecture and was built in 1932. It is so called not because of, it is painted white but because it was built in memory of the first Political Officer of Sikkim, Claude White. There is an Officers' Club and a badminton court in the White Hall.
