Fatehpursikri Tourism Information


Fatehpur Sikri is a planned tourist city which was founded by Mughal Emperor Akbar.

This small city located at Delhi- Agra road, about 40 km from the Agra. Fatehpur Sikri is an ultimate example of Islamic architecture.

History of Fatehpur Sikri:

Fatehpur Sikri was established by Mughal Emperor Akbar during his reign 1571 and1584, dedicated it to the saint Sheikh Salim Chisti.

Akbar wanted to develop Fatehpur Sikri as his capital but water shortage compelled him to shift his capital to Lahore.

The monument of the Fatehpur Sikri, which is made up of red sandstone and white marbles is a marvelous pieces of Islamic and Hindu architecture. This lost city still has a lot of monuments which recall the memories of old glorious time. Some of them are:

Diwan-Khana-I-Khaas:

This was the important building, only Akbar and his reliable (courtiers) was permitted to enter in the premises of the building. According to records this royal chamber basically used for collect the valuables. There were three separate chambers for Gold (Mudra), Silver (coins) and Gems, Jewels and Copper (Dams) respectively. This chamber is a unique piece of architecture.

Diwan-I-Am:

The hall in the premises was designed for the large public gathering. This huge building was used as a court room, where Akbar heard the complaints and gave verdict on them.



Panch Mahal:

This is the highest building in a complex, which was basically used for private affairs of king. This five story building used by Akbar to spent his evenings with the ladies of his harem.

Birbal Bhavan:

This small but attractive palace was the residence of Pandit Birbal, a most intelligent prime minister in akbar’s brigade.

Buland Darwaza:

This grandeur structure was erected in 1602 AD to commemorate Akbar’s victory over Deccan. The Buland Darwaza ranks as a highest and biggest Darwaza (Door) in the world.

Dargah of Sheikh Salim Chisti:

This holy Dargah was built by Akbar in 1570. Here childless women come for blessings of saint. The carved marble lattice screens (Jalis) are simply superb.

Except these marvelous structures Fatehpur has a lot of other tourist sites to explore and some of them are The Treasury, Turkish sultan’s house, Hawa Mahal and Nagina Masjid and more.
