Dwarka Tourism Information



Dwarka city is one of the ancient cities of India, situated at the Jamnagar district in the state of Gujarat, India. Dwarka is an important pilgrimage of Hindus.

According to legends, the Dwarka city was the dwelling place of Krishna.

It is believed that due to and destruction by the sea, Dwarka has submerged six times and modern city is a 7th city to be built in the area.

History of Dwarka:

The name of Dwarka city is mentioned in the Mahabharata, the Harivansha, the Bhagavata Purana, the Skanda Purana, and the Vishnu Purana. Dwarka consider as one of the seven oldest cities of India. It is believed that the city was stabilised by Lord Krishna.

It is said that Lord Krishna, after slaying Kansa, left his abode at Mathura and traveled with the entire Yadava community to the coast of Saurashtra where he founded a town and named it Swarnadwarika (Later called Dwarka). The oldest temple of Dwarka is stablised by the Shambha, the grandson of Lord Krishna.

Dwarkadheesh Temple:

Dwarkadheesh Temple, 2500 year dates back temple is situated at the north bank of the Gomti Creek. The temple is also called Jagat Mandir. This temple is a perfect example of ancient architecture. The main temple is five-story high with the lavishly carved conical spire rising to a height of 157 feet.

Rukmini Devi Temple:

this temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna’s wife Rukmini. This architectural masterpiece is situated 1.5 km from the Dwarka city. This temple is said to date back t the 12th century. The temple walls are decorated with beautiful paintings depicting her pastime with Krishna.

Gomati Ghat Temples:

This place where Gomati, the descended Ganga, meets the sea at Chakratirtha Ghat. It is to believe that to take bath where Gomati meets the sea it offer liberation. There are so many small temples surrounding with ghats.

Except these Bhadkeshwar Temple, Sunset Point, Shri Jagatguru Shankaracharya Math, Ved Havan, Light House, Shardapith Math Museum are other holy and tourist places of Dwarka, where should visit once.
