Dharamsala is a place which is connected with Hindu and Buddhism for a long time. During 8th centuries many monasteries have been established by the Tibetan immigrants. However these monasteries are believed to have declined, with traditional Hindu building styles experiencing a revival. In 1848 the area was captured by British and they established a garrison in the town.
It became a popular hill station for the British. Dharamsala was the administrative capital of Kangra District in 1852. In 1905 a massive earthquake destroyed the town and estimated 20,000 people were killed. 1960, when Dalai Lama left the Tibet, then Prime Minister offered to permit him and his followers to establish a ‘government-in-exile’. |
