Daman Tourism Information

Daman is situated on the west coast of India on the Arabian Sea. Daman is famous for its beaches, Portuguese colonial architecture, Churches, and the scenic beauty of the city.

These qualities of Daman make a city a perfect tourist destination. Vapi (13 km) is a nearest railway station from Daman. Daman lies at the mouth of Daman Ganga River.

The twin cities of Daman, Nani-Daman and Moti-Daman are famous for their splendid beauty, which lies opposite each other across the Daman Ganga. Daman is only 160 km from the Mumbai. The location of Daman made it an exotic and excellent tourist destination of India.

History of Daman:

In the beginning of the millennium, the region in and around Daman, was ruled by the Kushana Emperor. Later between the 2nd Century BC and 13th Century AD, Daman formed a part of the kingdom known as Lata, ruled by the Rashtrakutas of Malkhed. The district of Daman including the coastal tract from Surat to Mahim continued to be ruled by the chieftains of Ramnagar during 14th century. In the late 14th century and the early years of the 15th century Portuguese entered in Daman. Daman was occupied by the Portuguese in 1531, and was formally ceded to Portugal in 1539 by the sultan of Gujarat.

It remained a major outpost of the Portuguese opium trade to China till such time as the Portuguese remained a valid naval power. With the end of British colonial rule in India, the Portuguese enclaves of Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli became restive. The Portuguese finally conceded these enclaves independence in 1961.Ever since then, Daman and Diu has been administered as special territories of the Indian Union by the central government in Delhi.

Daman Tourist Attractions


Fort of Moti-Daman:

The huge fort dates back to 16th century. This fort is one of the main tourist attractions of the Daman.

During the Portuguese rule large number of Portuguese gentry used to reside within confine of the fort with their families.

Jampore Beach:

This beautiful beach is a perfect tourist site for the nature lover. From here you can enjoy the whisper of the palm trees and laze around

Fort of Nani Daman:

This fort small in size but a masterpiece of Portuguese architecture. The fort included an ancient church and a fishing dock. The most conspicuous part of the fort is the giant human figures, on either side of the gateway. The lighthouse offers a majestic charm to its lovely beach.

Damanganga Tourist Complex:

This is a modern tourist hang out place in Daman. The complex has a Cafeteria, Cottages, Conference Hall, and Health Club. It insures your Daman tour should be rocking.

Except these beautiful Tourist sites Daman have lot of other places for explore some of them are Porgola Garden, Church of Bom Jesus, Collector House, House of Bocage, The Paryatan Bhavan, and Devka Amusement Park.
