Chennai Tourism Information



Chennai belongs to fraternity of four metro cities of India and also a capital of Tamil Nadu state. The city is located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal. This city is a hub of automobile industry in India.

Tamil literature, Bharatanatyam (A classic dance form) and Tamil film industry, makes a city culturally rich too. Being a metro city it is very well connected through Train, Plain and Highway.

History of Chennai:


Before the arrival of British East India Company, Chennai was the small village of fisherman’s named Madraspatnam.
In 1640 British reached at the costal area of Chennai and found this place appropriate for there trade, because of its costal front.Later British developed that small village and it changed into as there administrative capital of the Madras Presidency. After independence Madras became capital of Tamil Nadu state.

One of the biggest cities of south India, Chennai is a crowded metro with nostalgia of colonial period. Chennai has a valuables in his treasure like St. Mary’s Church, the oldest Anglican Church in India, Fort St. George the first colonial building built by British in 1640 and so many other jewel, some of them are:

The Marine Beach:

World’s second largest beach is Marine Beach of Chennai. This beach is a best place to relax from the rat race of city.

University of Chennai, Saint House, Chepuk Palace and Ice house are some beautiful buildings, located on the beach drive.

Kalashetra:


This temple of art is situated at Thiruvanbayur, in Chennai. There is still old form of schooling held, on the ancient pattern of education, Gurukul education. This is a prestigious center to learn Bharatanatyam and classical music in town.

Government Museum and Art Gallery:

In this complex you can see the sculptures and carvings from the Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagar period. This is also a center of artistic and sculptural activities of the city.

Parks:

Anna Zoological Park is a place where you can enjoy the wild life. Here you can enjoy a safari, a nocturnal animal house and an aquarium. National Park at Guindy (Especially a Deer park) and Madras Snake Park are other parks for hunter visit in Chennai city.

Kapaleeswarar Temple:


This ancient temple is situated from the 13th century to till date with a same grace. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Temple is a pure example of Dravidian style of architecture.
