The history of this town lies around the Rudranath-Gopinath temple.
This ancient temple was established by Adi Shankaracharya, during the reign of the Katyuri dynasty. Later Chamoli was ruled by Gorkhas, Pals, and British.

Rudranath-Gopinath Temple:
One of the oldest temples in Uttarakhand was built during the reign of the Katyuri dynasty. This is a tallest and biggest temple in Garhwal region.
The main priests of the temple are Rawals from Kerela. Inside the temple idols of goddess Parvati, Goddess Chandika, Lord Vishnu, Lord Indra, and Shivling are placed. This temple is a unique creation of ancient architecture.
Vaitrani Kund:
This pool was made by Katyuri king for storage of water, this Kund was constructed for water supply in the town. This is a perfect place for hang out with natural beauty.
Some other tourist places for hang out in Chamoli (Gopeshwar) are Bhok Falls, Chamolanath Temple, Deendayal Upadhyay and Town in itself.
