Calicut Tourism Information

Calicut is a third largest city of Kerala state of India and now called as Kozhikode. This city is situated at the northern side of Kerala.

This beautiful city has a great importance in the history of Kerala. It was the traditional capital of northern Kerala under the Samuthiri rule during medieval period.

History of Calicut:

During the Medieval period (Zamorin rulers) it was the leading sea trade route for spices, silk and other goods with the china, Arabs, Jews, Dutch, and Portuguese more than 500 years.

In May 1498 Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed at Kappad, about 25 km from Calicut. Later the city was ruled by Portuguese and British. The city has a greatest trading history, which makes a one of the most visited tourist places of India.

Kappad Beach:

This is a place where Portuguese first set foot on May 1498. A small monument is commemorated here.

Pazhassirajah Museum:

This museum run by State Archaeological Department, located at East hills.

In this museum one can see the ancient mural paintings, antique bronzes and old coins with models of temples and megalithic monuments like umbrella stones.

Kallai:

this place has a great historical importance. Kallai was once the largest trading center in Asia for Calicut’s timber
trade. Still one can find some shadow of old trade center.

Beypore:

This small coastal town is 11 km away from the Calicut. For the centuries this area was famous as a ship building centre and presently it is famous for its country craft ‘Uru’. Beypore is still a favorite place among the Arabs for buying of large boats.

Science Planetarium:

One of the worlds prestigious Planetarium is situated here at Jaffar khan Colony. Where one can reveals the majestic world of universe and can enlightens about the stars and planets.

Mananchira:

The palace tank belongs to King Mana Vikrama, is now converted into a traditional architectural site and has become a favorite tourist site of the city.
