Bijapur Tourism Information

Bijapur is situated at the state of Karnataka in India. The city is located about 530 km from Bangalore.

Bijapur is famous for his historical buildings and monuments, which were built during the Adil Shah dynasty. This called gateway to Karnataka from the Goa and Mumbai.

History of Bijapur:

The Bijapur city was established during 10th-11th century by the Chalukyas of Kalyani and referred the city as Vijayapura (City of victory).

In late 13th century the city was came under the control of Khiliji Sultanate of Delhi. In 1347 the area was controlled by Bahmani Sultanate of Gulbarga and city referred as Vijapur or Bijapur.

The period of Adil Shah Dynasty (1490-1686) was the golden era for the Bijapur maximum monuments were built up during that period. Later in 19th century it came under the British rule and after independence became a part of India.

Bijapur Tourist Attractions

Bijapur is famous for his historical monuments. Gol Gumbaz is the most famous tourist site. It is a second largest dome ever built in the world, only St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is larger than this. But there are many more monuments in the city for watch and some of them are:

The Malik-e-Maiden:

This is a world’s largest medieval cannon. It has 4 meter long, 1.5 meter diameter and 55tons of weight. The cannon was brought back from the Ahmednagar in the 17th century as a war trophy and placed on the Sherza Burj (Lion Gate) especially built for it. It is said that after igniting the cannon, the gunner would remain underwater in a tank to avoid the deafening explosion.

The Ibrahim Roza:

The beautiful mausoleum of Ibrahim Adil II is a fantastic artistic monument. It is said that the building had inspired the Taj Mahal. The stone works, decorated walls, and marvelous corridors give the credit to must see tourist monument of Bijapur.

Upri Burj:

This 80 ft high tower was built by Hyder Khan by 1584. This is also known as Hyder Burj. The top of the Burk gives a panoramic view of the city and on top there are two huge size guns standing with a pride. For reach in a top one needs to climb the circular stairs.

Aihole, Pattadakal, Badami, Basavana Bagewadi, and Kudalasangama are some famous tourist spots in the surroundings of Bijapur district.
