A Golden City

Amritsar is one of the important cities of Sikh religions, basically known for the Sikh pilgrimage ‘Golden Temple’. Amritsar is also recalled for brutal act of Jallianwala bagh tragedy. But more importantly Amritsar is known for its sprit and braveness.

History of Amritsar:

The History of this holy city start from year 1574 when Guru Ram Das Sahib founded the city and built a residence and in 1577 he built a sarovar (tank) in the city.

In year 1586 Guru Arjun Singh renovated the sarovar and after that this city named Amritsar. Amritsar is also remembered for the Jallianwala bagh kand, when more than 300 innocent people killed and 1200 people injured in a brutal act of police firing headed by General Dyer, in year 1919.

Amritsar Tourist Attractions

The spiritual city Amritsar is a real impression of Punjabi heritage and culture. Amritsar is one of the major cities of state of Punjab in India. City has a lot of tourist sights to explore some of them are:

Golden Temple:

Golden temple is the most holy temple of Sikh shrine. It is believed that a Sufi Hazrat Mian Mir laid the foundation of this shrine. But the temple was built by the Guru Ram Das with his son Arjun dev in late fifteens.

The main attraction of the temple is its full golden dome. Due to his religious importance and architecture it’s a most visited tourist site in Amritsar.


Wagah Border:

This is an international border between the India and Pakistan. Wagah border is famous for its ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony. In this ceremony, every evening during a sunset, soldiers of both sides perform a perfect drill and bringing down their respective national flags.

Jallianwala bagh:

This is a place where more than 2000 people were brutally killed the police was commended by General Dyer, in April, 13, 1919. On the memory of those innocent freedom fighters many people visits the place daily and feel the greatness of those souls. The marks of bullet still visible in the walls and a well in which many people were jumped to escape, still present to tell the horrifying tale of that time.

Ram Bagh, Ram Tirath, Pul Kanjari, Samadhi of guru Angad dev ji, Jama Masjid Khairuddin and Khoo Kalyanwala are some other tourist sights where one should go compulsorily during an Amritsar visit.
