If anything, these temples are the most advanced examples
of north Indian temple architecture.
Above all, Khajuraho temples, built by Chandela kings between
950 to 1050 AD, are world-famous for a series of friezes
and carvings.
They’re not celebrated because they are made of some
unknown form of gold or silver, but rather for their erotic
innuendoes. For these, Khajuraho Temples are registered in
the list of UNESCO's World Heritage sites. The surrounding
jungles threatened to assimilate the Khajuraho temple complex,
until a British engineer stumbled upon the site in 1838 AD.
There were originally 85 temples, but only 22 are
left today. Each of the temples is categorized into
one of three groups, namely the Western, Eastern and
Southern Groups.
The Western Group of Temples is hailed for being the
location of the Kandariya Mahadeva, the largest temple
in the complex. This sanctum protects a lingam, a phallic
symbol symbolizing energy, fertility and potency.
Ascending 31 km high, the temple is just one among
many distinctive temples in the group like Jagadambika
Temple, Chitragupta Temple and Lakshmana Temple. |

Along with Jain shrines, the Eastern Group of Temples is
comprised of the Brahma Temple, Vamana Temple and Javari
Temple.
Duladeo Temple and Chaturbhuj Temple are part of the Southern Group of Temples. Built between 1100 and 1150 AD, the Duladeo Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva while Chaturbhuja Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
